A home for kink groups

kink.town is a private chat service for kink communities. Each group gets its own corner, with encrypted chats, Spaces full of rooms, voice and video calls, and Communities to share news. Everything runs on servers we look after, for people we know.

What is kink.town?

kink.town is built on XMPP, an open chat standard that has been around for over 20 years, and Movim, an app that runs in your browser. You don't need to install anything: sign in at kink.town from a phone or computer. You can also install it like an app, and there are phone and desktop apps that work with the same account.

Unlike most chat services, kink.town is closed: it doesn't connect to the wider XMPP network, and nobody can sign up without an invitation. Everyone you meet here was invited by someone in the community.

Encrypted chats

Every private and group chat is end-to-end encrypted with OMEMO. The server refuses messages that aren't, so nothing slips through by accident.

Spaces

A Space gathers a group's chat rooms in one place. Group leaders create them and approve who joins.

Calls

Voice and video calls, one-to-one or in a room. Large group calls can use our own conference server.

Communities & stories

Communities are news feeds for announcements and discussion. Stories and blog posts let you share with your contacts.

Groups

Each group has its own address, and your account belongs to one of them: for example yourname@ipex.kink.town or yourname@iik.kink.town. Groups can have their own home page at their address, such as ipex.kink.town.

Being in one group doesn't wall you off from the others. You can add contacts, chat, call and join Spaces across groups. Only creating Spaces and Communities is reserved for group leaders. The FAQ explains exactly what you can share.

What's private, and what isn't

Your chats, the pictures and files you send in them, and one-to-one and small group calls are end-to-end encrypted: only the people in the conversation can read or hear them.

Some things can't be encrypted that way, because they're shared with changing groups of people: your profile, stories, blog and Community posts, comments, the names of Spaces and rooms, and large group calls. Those are protected from other members by their privacy settings, but the people running the server could technically see them. The app warns you on each of those screens.

The encryption section of the FAQ lists exactly what's encrypted, what isn't and why, and what the server knows about you.

Joining

kink.town is invite only. If you know someone in a group, ask them or their group leader for an invitation link. Opening it lets you choose your username and password; then sign in at kink.town with your full address.
